Connection is the foundation of any relationship, but it’s hard to find the time and space to deepen your bond. Work, family, and household responsibilities can overshadow your quality time and distract you from what truly matters (each other!). If you’re looking for the best way to reconnect with your partner, a couple’s getaway may be just what you need. Here are our tips for planning a romantic mountain getaway in Winthrop, Washington.

Why Mountains?

The whole point of a couple’s vacation is to spend quality time together. Quality time means being able to talk and understand each other. It means having the space and grace to learn and grow together. Mountains create the perfect environment for building relationships. Here’s why!

Beautiful Scenery

Gorgeous scenery goes a long way in setting the mood for a vacation, and the Cascade Mountains deliver! Towering snowcapped peaks, thick evergreen forests, and crystal lakes create an ideal backdrop for reconnection. You can bond over the beauty of nature as you explore the picturesque landscape.

Healthy Environment

It’s no secret that spending time outdoors is good for you, but it’s also good for your relationship. Sunshine, exercise, and fresh air are good for your physical, mental, and emotional health. Those factors alone can make you a better partner. But these benefits are compounded when combined with the benefits of spending time together.

Many outdoor activities, like rock climbing and rafting, require a level of communication and trust. But even activities you could do alone, like skiing or hiking, will help you feel more in sync as you move together.

Intimate Experiences

Large cities can be fun, but it’s hard to enjoy alone time when you're surrounded by other people. You don’t have to worry about that in a mountain town like Winthrop! While there are amazing people you can meet in town, there’s also plenty of space. So, you can experience the ideal balance of public and private moments to rekindle your romance.

Spring in the Mountains

When the daylight hours lengthen, the weather starts to warm, and the Cascade Mountains spring back to life. Spring in Winthrop is peaceful and quiet. The skiing crowds of winter are gone, and the summer travellers have yet to arrive– meaning you get the beautiful snowcapped mountains and wildflowers all to yourself.

What to do

  • Late-season skiing: Winter may be peak ski season, but many trails are open until April! Late-season skiing means open trails without crowds.
  • Take to the skies: The Winthrop Balloon Roundup is an amazing annual event. Book a romantic ride, or sit back and enjoy the show from the ground!
  • Peaceful nature hike: Warmer weather invites plants and animals back to the mountains. Go on a walk and look for blooming flowers, migrating birds, baby deer, and more.
  • Picnic among the flowers: Speaking of flowers, imagine feasting on a picnic in a field of blossoms. Bring along your treats, drinks, and a camera for the afternoon. Just remember to respect nature and pack it all back out again.

What to pack

  • Layers: The mornings and evenings are still chilly, so plan on bringing extra jackets.
  • Rain gear: Washington is known for rain, and spring is the rainiest season of all. Be prepared for showers!
  • Waterproof boots: Rain means mud, so make sure you bring some waterproof boots to keep your feet warm and dry.
  • Light-weight blanket: Perfect for picnics or cuddling together on the porch while you enjoy the forest views.

Summer in the Mountains

Summer is the season for adventurous couples. The long, sunny days are perfect for all kinds of activities and adventures. Nature-lovers will love the diverse wildlife and the beautiful forests around Winthrop, and sporty couples will love all the activities. Here are just a few ways couples can spend a summer in the mountains.

What to do

  • Rafting: If you want to test your teamwork, rafting is the way to go. The river rapids are a great metaphor for life. If you can make it down the river together, you can make it through anything.
  • Hiking and biking: For fresh air and amazing views, hit the trails. Whether you’re hiking hand-in-hand or riding side-by-side, the Methow Trails are a great place to enjoy some quality time together.
  • Swimming: Splashing around a lake or stream can be both flirty and fun. There are a lot of swimming holes in Methow Valley. You can make it a goal to try them all!
  • Horseback riding: Ride off into the sunset together on a horseback expedition. While sharing a horse isn’t encouraged on most mountain trails, riding side-by-side is still a sweet way to immerse yourselves in romantic western fantasy.

What to Pack

  • Sunscreen: High elevations mean a higher concentration of UVs. Bring along extra sunblock to avoid burns. Show your love and ensure full coverage by applying it on each other.
  • Bug spray: There’s nothing attractive about a mosquito bite. Summer means bugs, so make sure you bring some bug spray with you before you head outside.
  • Swim suit: With all the opportunities for rafting, canoeing, and swimming, you’ll end up in the water at some point. Make sure to bring a swimsuit (or two) so you can take a dip.
  • Water bottle: Hydration is always important, especially in the mountains. Even if you don’t think you’ll need it, bring extra water with you wherever you go.

Autumn in the Mountains

There’s something magical about autumn in the Cascades. The crisp air, colorful leaves, and the starry nights– it’s impossible not to fall in love (pun intended). Autumn is a season of comfort and nostalgia. For couples who love old-school romance and cozy vibes, fall in Winthrop is the romantic escape you’re looking for.

What to do

  • Fairs and festivals: Fall is peak fair season. Check out local harvest festivals, farmers’ markets, and art fairs all season long!
  • Admire fall foliage: The forests around Winthrop erupt into shades of rich gold and fiery orange every year. Take a scenic drive or a walk to soak in the fantastic sights.
  • Get a good drink: Wine is the go-to beverage for romance, while ciders and beers set a relaxing atmosphere to reconnect. Plan a tasting to find the best match at Methow Valley’s local wineries, ciderhouses, and breweries.
  • Star-gazing: You can technically star-gaze all year round, but the autumn skies have some of the best views (in our opinion).

What to pack

  • Thermos: There are few things more cozy than a warm drink on a chilly day. Bring a thermos so you can savor coffee, cocoa, cider, or tea on the go!
  • Layers: The autumn breeze is no joke, and you may even see some early snow. Make sure you pack long sleeves and jackets for warmth.
  • Flannel blanket: A light blanket is great for spring, but you’ll want something warmer for fall. A flannel blanket is the perfect light but functional blanket for the season.

Winter in the Mountains

Winter in Winthrop is breathtaking. White mountains, frosty pines, and frozen waterfalls glitter in the sunlight like crystals and glow in the dark like the stars. Winter gets a bad rep due to the long nights and cold weather, but the snowy season provides so many opportunities for romance. Here are some of our favorite couples’ activities.

What to do

  • Skiing and snowshoeing: Live your own winter wonderland dreams by exploring the snowscape. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking are great ways to enjoy each other’s company and the views.
  • Ice skating: Look, it’s a Hallmark Movie cliche for a reason; ice skating is romantic. Gliding across the ice is winter’s version of dancing the night away.
  • Let it snow: Have you ever taken the time to just watch the snowfall? If not, you should. Curl up together in a warm blanket with warm drinks for a peaceful winter day.
  • Build a fire: The warm glow and soft crackling of a fire create a soothing atmosphere for relaxation and connection. Indulge yourselves with time together, and your favorite snacks.

What to Pack

  • Thermals: Dressing for the weather should be your first priority in the winter. Thermals may not be sexy, but they do keep you warm. Make sure you pack appropriate thermals if you plan to engage in winter activities.
  • Lotion and lip balm: Cracked skin and chapped lips don’t do much to set the mood. The cold air is rough on skin, so pack extra moisturizer and lip balm to soothe and smooth irritated skin.
  • Indoor activities: You can’t spend all your time in the snow. Make sure to pack some books, movies, puzzles, or games for some quality indoor time together.
