Summer Weather in the Cascades

Winter seems to linger forever, but the snow melts away to reveal emerald forests, wildflower-strewn meadows, and crystal-clear rivers. You’ll find the wait for summer was well worth it. Daytime temperatures are warm, but not too hot, usually topping out in the 70s and 80s. The mountain air stays fresh and crisp, especially in the mornings and evenings. With low humidity and plenty of sunshine, it’s the perfect climate for enjoying the mountains.

Best Outdoor Activities

Don’t get us wrong, Methow Valley is a great outdoor escape all year round, but summer provides the best conditions to experience the full potential of the Cascades.

Hit the Trails

Lace up your boots or hop on your bike—the Methow Trials are calling. Methow Valley isn’t just the home of Winthrop; it’s also the home of one of the best trail systems in North America. From gentle forest walks to high-alpine hikes with panoramic views, there's a trail for every pace.

  • Trail Running and Hiking: If you love to feel the earth under your feet, the Methow Trail system has 120 miles of trails to explore.
  • Bikers: Bikers love the challenging singletrack routes around Sun Mountain and the smooth gravel paths along the Methow Valley Trail system.
  • Rock Climbing: If you want something more rigorous, check out Goat Wall in nearby Mazama, known for its sport climbing routes and stunning backdrops.

Swimming Spots

After a long day of hiking and biking, nothing helps you relax and cool off than a dip in a cool mountain stream or lake, and the mountains around Winthrop have plenty of both!  Here are some great swimming spots to check out.

  • The Methow River: The River is great for a refreshing dip, a relaxing tube float, or a little catch-and-release fishing.
  • Patterson Lake: Just west of town is a pristine lake perfect for swimming, fishing, or a relaxing boat ride.
  • Twin Lakes: If you are looking for serenity, Twin Lakes is the place. If you love mountain views and clear waters, that is.
  • Pearrygin Lake State Park: Located just a few miles east of town, this state park is everything you want in a lake park: clean water, fish for anglers, and beautiful scenery.

Taking a Ride

If you are more into adrenaline and adventure, try taking a ride! Winthrop isn’t all tranquil trails and lakes; there’s plenty for thrill seekers to try.

  • White water rafting: The Methow River is great for rafters, especially in early summer when the snowmelt feeds the rapids.
  • Take to the skies: If you want a bird's eye view of the valley, book a hot air balloon ride
  • Horseback riding: If you want a slower pace, book a horseback tour of the mountains for a true western experience.

Tips for Mountain Summers

It’s important to plan for any vacation in any season, especially one in the mountains. In many ways, summer is safer than snowy winters and wet springs, but there are still some tips to keep in mind when traveling in the Cascades.

What to pack

  • Layers: temperatures fluctuate drastically, even in summer. Make sure to bring a light jacket for cool nights.
  • Sun protection: UV rays are stronger at higher altitudes, so make sure to wear sun protection.
  • Bug repellent: If you are spending time outdoors, there will be bugs. Pack some repellent to avoid bites and stings.
  • Waterbottle: It’s easy to get dehydrated when you're having fun, so pack a refillable water bottle to take on your adventures.
  • Sturdy Shoes: Whether you are staying on well-established trails or venturing into the back country, sturdy shoes with ankle support are essential to protect your feet.

What to expect

Winthrop is a popular destination for visitors and locals alike, but despite its popularity, it rarely feels overcrowded. The town also has all the amenities you can expect from a tourist destination, but the same can’t be said for the surrounding areas. Cell reception and satellite connection can be spotty in the mountains, so make sure to download maps and tell people where you are going before you go to more remote areas.
