Jump to a Section:
When snow starts to fall in Washington state, it means one thing: ski season has arrived. The Cascade Mountains are some of the best slopes in the country, and Winthrop is one of Washington’s most charming skiing destinations.
In Winthrop, alpine peaks rise in every direction, Nordic trails ribbon through quiet forests, and an Old-West downtown glows with holiday lights. Whether you’re craving downhill thrills, peaceful cross-country routes, or a cozy winter retreat, Winthrop delivers the perfect blend of adventure and small-town magic. Here’s your guide to planning your skiing getaway.

Types of Skiing
Winthrop’s diverse terrain makes it an ideal base for all types of skiing and for skiers of all levels of experience. From high-speed downhill runs to graceful ski trails and classic telemark carving, every snow-lover will find the perfect way to explore the Cascades. Let’s talk about the three primary skiing styles you can try in Winthrop.
Downhill Skiing
When you think of skiing, this is probably what you’re picturing: athletes gliding down the slopes through the powdery snow. If this is your ski style, you’ll want to head to Loup Loup Ski Bowl.
Located just 30 minutes from Winthrop,
Loup Loup Ski Bowl is Methow Valley’s beloved local ski hill. The 300 acres of the Loup offer groomed runs ranging from gentle greens to challenging black diamonds, making it perfect for groups with mixed experience levels. The Loup also offers various passes and ticket options, so you can tailor your alpine skiing adventure to your needs.
Uphill travelers must be off the mountain by 4 pm, so get your tickets as soon as the office opens at 8:30 am to get in as many runs as you can!

Cross-Country Skiing
If you’re more interested in exploring the landscape than rushing down the slopes, cross-country skiing may be for you.
Cross-country skiing is the most common form of Nordic skiing. It’s a full-body workout that involves propelling yourself across the countryside using your own power– no lifts or engines involved. And Winthrop happens to be located right on the
Methow Trail System, the largest Nordic ski system in North America.
With more than 120 miles of impeccably groomed trails that weave through meadows, pine forests, and scenic river valleys, this is an unbeatable skiing destination. Whether you’re skate skiing at sunrise or gliding along a peaceful classic track under falling snow, there’s a trail waiting for you in Methow Valley.
Telemark Skiing
For those who want the best of both the rush of alpine skiing and the workout of cross-country, give Telemark Skiing a try.
Telemark is a form of Nordic skiing that combines elements of alpine and cross-country skiing. The sport uses a “free feel” binding that allows for a lunge-like stance and distinctive turns. It’s a sport that’s been growing in popularity, especially in Methow Valley.
The Loup and the surrounding backcountry offer excellent terrain for telemark skiers looking to perfect their turns. Local outfitters can often provide lessons, technique clinics, and gear rentals, making Winthrop a fantastic place to discover or sharpen this graceful style.

Ski Trip Packing List
The Cascade Mountains are beautiful, but packing for a winter trip in Winthrop requires some extra thought. When preparing for a ski trip, you’ll want to consider the following: safety, warmth, and fun! Here's what to bring along for a smooth and enjoyable ski escape.
Clothing
Layering is essential for any winter activity, not just to stay warm, but also to cool down. Snow may be falling, but you’ll work up a sweat on the trails. Here’s a checklist of some basic ski layers:
- Insulated waterproof jacket
- Waterproof ski pants
- Snowsuits
- Thermal base layers
- Mid-layer fleece or down jacket
- Wool socks (2 pairs are advisable)
- Neck gaiter and warm hat
- Waterproof gloves or mittens
*Pro Tip: If you’re planning on skiing every day, you may want to bring multiple jackets, pants, or snowsuits so one set can dry while you're on the slopes.
Health and Safety
Safety should be a top priority when engaging in any outdoor activity. While the trails and slopes are well-maintained, accidents can still happen. So, before you lock in your skis, make sure you have the following:
Waterproof pocket/bag for ID, Medical cards, phone, and passes
Sunscreen and lip balm (snow reflects UV rays!)
Aloe Cream (in case you experience chaffing or a burn)- Small first aid kit
- Hand warmers
- Trail map for Nordic skiing
- Reusable water bottle or hydration pack
Equipment
You can’t go skiing without the proper gear! Depending on the type of skiing you do, this list may change, but you’ll need these basics:
- Skis and poles
- Ski boots
- Goggles (with UV protection)
- Helmet (especially for downhill skiing)
- Ski mask
Rentals: If you don’t have your own gear, no worries! You can rent all the equipment you need at local outfitters in Mazama, Winthrop, and The Loup. Ask about trail conditions while you’re there!

Other Activities
You can’t ski
all
the time – or maybe you can, we won’t judge – but Winthrop is full of so many other fun winter activities! Whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or on your own, there’s so much to enjoy during the snowy season. Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy a winter day in Winthrop.
Tubing/Sledding
If you are looking for accessible fun, The Loup’s tubing hill is fast, groomed, and lift-served. Tubing is the perfect family activity for kids of all ages. If you don’t want to go to The Loup, there are also informal tubing and sledding spots around Methow Valley.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is a peaceful way to explore the Methow Valley’s winter landscape. Many of the Methow Trails have designated snowshoe routes, offering a quieter but equally scenic alternative to skiing.
Skating
The Winthrop Rink is one of the best outdoor skating rinks in the Northwest. This full-sized rink is a great place to play a pick-up hockey game, enjoy free-skate, or watch others glide across the ice. If you don’t have skates, no problem! You can always rent a pair. It’s a festive way to spend an afternoon or evening.
